Chico Artist Judy Kane

Artists often talk about where inspiration begins. In Chico, it’s everywhere — along the shaded paths of Bidwell Park, beside the slow curve of Big Chico Creek, and in the engaging conversations that spill out of studios and galleries around town.
That environment has guided local artist Judy Kane for decades, shaping work that blends art, anthropology, and a deep curiosity about culture and the human experience. And now, as her featured exhibit at Plumas Bank’s Chico Branch enters its final weeks, community members have one last opportunity to experience Kane’s work before it concludes at the end of January.
Presented through Plumas Bank’s ongoing partnership with the Museum of Northern California Art (monca), Kane’s collection has been on display since October, transforming the Mangrove Avenue branch into an extended gallery space that celebrates Northern California creativity in an everyday setting.
A Lifelong Curiosity Expressed Through Color
Judy Kane is an accomplished abstract artist and anthropologist whose work reflects her lifelong curiosity about culture, civilization, and humanity’s relationship with the Earth. Her paintings range from light and whimsical to richly layered explorations of color, rhythm, and depth, with each piece offering its own sense of movement and emotion.
In addition to her paintings, Kane’s home studio is filled with a variety of creative projects, from collage papers and mixed-media works to original clocks and sculptures. Her approach to creativity is expansive, rooted in exploration and constant learning.
“Art makes my entire life possible,” Kane shares. “An artist investigates, learns continually, and struggles to make. Change comes to the world because of what artists envision.”
That philosophy is visible throughout her work, which invites viewers to pause, reflect and connect through color and form.
Rooted in Chico’s Creative Community
Kane has been an active member of the Chico arts community for nearly 50 years. During that time, her work has been featured at venues including the Blue Line Gallery in Roseville, Chico Arts Center, and monca.
Before dedicating herself full time to art, Kane earned a master’s degree in oral history and museum studies from California State University, Chico. She went on to build a meaningful career serving underserved populations in the areas of preventive health and consumer protection.
Art in Everyday Spaces
Plumas Bank’s Chico Branch continues its tradition of supporting local creativity through its partnership with monca. The branch serves as an extension of Chico’s creative landscape, offering artists a welcoming venue and inviting visitors to engage with art throughout the space.
“We’re thrilled to feature Judy’s art throughout our Mangrove Avenue location,” said Ian Macmillian, vice president, branch manager at Plumas Bank’s Chico location. “Her work captures both imagination and reflection, offering our community a window into the vibrant artistry that thrives here in Chico. We invite everyone to stop by and experience her creative vision firsthand.”
Over the years, the Chico branch has featured the work of numerous Northern California artists, including Rick Vertolli, Simone Senat, and Janet Blixt. Each exhibit reflects Plumas Bank’s commitment to celebrating local creativity and strengthening community connections through the arts.

In addition to Kane’s featured collection, visitors to the Chico Branch can take care of their everyday banking needs and also view fine art landscape prints on metal by Paradise artist Jeremy Vesely, along with Plumas Bank’s permanent outdoor mural created by Chico artist Dylan Tellesen.
Together, these installations reinforce the branch’s role as an accessible cultural space — one that invites curiosity, conversation and connection.
Kane’s exhibit concludes at the end of January, meaning now is the final opportunity to experience her work in person at the branch. Community members are invited to stop by Plumas Bank at 900 Mangrove Avenue. The exhibit is open during regular banking hours, typically Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (with the exception of bank holidays).
